Starfleet Profile: Keiran O'Sullivan

Name of Officer: Keiran O'Sullivan
Rank: Department Of Temporal Investigations: Captain
Aboard the USS Serendipity: Commander
Current Assignment: Security Liaison for The Alchemy Project
Previous Assignment: Captain of the USS Perseids NX 57871, Temporal Investigations (2388 current timeline)
Species: Human
Age: 42 Standard Years

Physical Description:
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 225 pounds
Hair: Light Brown/Gray
Eyes: Blue

Marital Status: Married:
To Captain Zanh Liis
Stardate 81020

Scars/Tattoos/Distinguishing Physical Characteristics:
Keiran Riley O'Sullivan is broad shouldered and barrel chested man, with a ruggedly handsome appearance. He's been known at times to sport a neatly trimmed beard.

He has broken his nose more than once in physical altercations, the first happening when he was only fourteen, and due to a dislike of doctors that began as a child, he never had it surgically corrected.

He also broke it once in a high school rugby match.

He has a tattoo of his family crest on his right arm.

Personal History:
*1 (see footnote)
Keiran is the middle child of a large family (he has six siblings)born to parents who fought loudly, but at the end of the day, still loved each other. His housewife mother and dock worker father were married for more than forty years until his mother's passing- his father is still alive and still ornery.

The motto for the O'Sullivans is "An Lámh Fhoisteanach Abú" which translates as "The Steady Hand to Victory".

Like many security officers assigned to the brutal front lines during the Dominion War, Keiran found that even though the Federation eventually won the fight, he lost himself along the way, dying a piece at a time along with each of his friends and comrades who perished before the conflict was over.

When Keiran came home in 2374 (To County Cork, Ireland, where he'd been born in 2345) after suffering a critical combat injury, he found that he had been too changed by the war to return to the life of a family man. His wife, Maggie told him that she didn't know the man he'd become. She took their only child, a son, Carrick, and moved away.

The divorce was final a year later and Keiran has not seen his son, who would now be nearly seventeen, since he was a small boy. He writes letters to Carrick frequently, but never receives any reply.

With Keiran's family ties severed and his career stalling due to the baggage he carried back with him from the front, he was deemed a good candidate for recruitment into Special Ops, or Temporal Investigations.

He attended several levels of Advanced Tactical Training in anticipation of a career in either of those fields, but was frustrated that Starfleet Intelligence made him repeat core courses twice. Little did he realize that his temperament was being tested to an even greater degree than his skills as a law enforcement officer.

Eventually he was given the position of senior operative, working as a Jumper with the Timeline Control Division of Temporal Investigations under the direct supervision of a man named Jonas Vox.

In 2376 Keiran was assigned to mentor a headstrong new recruit named Zanh Liis. He had no idea that this meeting would end up changing the course of the rest of his life.

Due to repeated attempts at memory resequencing procedures (with varying degrees of success) Keiran would remember, and then lose memory of having worked with Zanh as his career progressed.

His relationship with Liis was complicated from the start, but became even more difficult as his feelings towards her changed and he wanted to pursue a relationship with her that nothing to do with their work. He knew that this was strictly against the code of conduct for Temporal Operatives, and did everything he could to keep their relationship professional- and Zanh Liis at a safe emotional distance.

In an alternate timeline version of the year 2377, Keiran O'Sullivan found that Zanh reciprocated his feelings. Acting on those emotions, however, would have catastrophic consequences for them both and require Keiran to make a jump into the past to correct the timeline, even though doing so meant that they could not be together again.

Despite this, he would repeat the same mistake again of going against the rules and in another variant of the year 2380, he and Zanh retired from Temporal Investigations and actually married.

They lived a year as man and wife before disaster struck and, as Keiran put it to Jariel Camen when he tried to explain, "Time took its penance."

After it became clear that their relationship was simply not meant to be, he would once again have to make the lonely journey of jumping back, to correct history and restore Zanh to her proper place.
Devastated by the loss of his wife and former TI partner- and what he considered to be all hopes of happiness along with her- Keiran submitted to a very dangerous procedure; one that he was promised would rid him of the memories of Zanh Liis once and for all. *2 (see footnote)
By the time Keiran was assigned to the Serendipity in early 2388, he had been free of the memories of his past for a long enough time that Admiral Vox felt it necessary to test whether or not that final, drastic resequencing procedure had worked, and would hold. He assigned Keiran as Zanh's Chief of Security on the brand new ship- knowing that she did not remember O'Sullivan, but worrying that O'Sullivan's memories and emotions were too strong to be suppressed forever.

The Admiral was right.

Within months of arriving on the ship and interacting with the Captain, the barriers in Keiran's brain began to break down, reactivating the memory engrams and once again plunging him into despair. Remembering her, their work together and their relationship as it had been in alternate branches of space time- he was secretly tormented by the fact that she did not remember him.

Fearing that discovery of their history could do irreparable damage to Zanh and the timeline, Keiran struggled to maintain control, and asked himself every morning if this day would be the last he was able to spend on her ship without risking another disaster.

All of his struggles appeared to be in vain when Zanh Liis suddenly began remembering things about their past relationship, even as Keiran's memories continued to intensify. They did not know this was due to the fact that a species of alien 'healers' was trying to intervene and 'help' free them of their painful pasts- doing more harm then good in the process.

It turned out in the end that his time on the Sera was simply part of another planned Jump for TI. Upon remembering, and the resolution of the Sylph first contact situation, Keiran was pulled from the Sera's roster and returned to his command within Temporal Investigations.

He continued to hold out hope that the next jump would be the one in which he finally bested both the Fates and Time itself- and found his way back to Zanh Liis for good.

In late 2388, Keiran would get his dearest wish.

After taking a Jump that he was certain would be his last, destiny stepped in and brought him back to his correct place in time, and to Zanh Liis' arms.

Due to the effects of living non-linear time he felt as though they'd been separated for two years; for Liis it was only a matter of weeks. Still he proposed to her as soon as he was told that his days with Temporal Investigations were over; and was amazed when Zanh actually said yes.

Wasting no more time after all they had been through, they married days later, surrounded by family and friends in Ireland on Stardate 81020.18

Work Ethic

Keiran very much considers himself an old fashioned detective; a "cop on the beat" and likes to get to know the faces, if not the personalities of all the people he serves with.

Social Interaction

Keiran is naturally gregarious- especially after several pints of Guinness. When drinking stronger spirits with a mind to escaping dark memories of the past, however, Keiran withdraws from all around him, drinks alone, and is a very sullen drunk.

(NOTE: Keiran swore off alcohol after the conclusion of his time on the Serendipity, toward the end of which he ended up starting a drunken brawl in Illusions Lounge and had to be subdued by TC Blane.)

Keiran was raised strictly Roman Catholic and was a choir boy at the Church of Christ the King at Turner's Cross. He still possesses a fine singing voice that is broad in range and easily covers the octaves between baritone and tenor without missing a note.

Eccentricities: Keiran wears an O'Sullivan family crest signet ring on his left hand where one would normally expect a wedding ring to be. Eventually, Zanh Liis discovered this was because it was the wedding ring she had given him when they had married in the variant version of 2380.
Special Skills

In addition to his advanced tactical training, Keiran is skilled in martial arts, hand to hand combat, use and handling of explosives and firearms. He knows his way around not only the modern weapons of the day, but the historical weapons of his homeland as well, which he considers to be a matter of pride.

History

Will was born into great wealth and to a family that was once considered of 'noble blood'. The term noble was not exactly what he would have called his family.

There were many terms he would call his family and his frequent repetition of these terms in earshot of his paternal grandfather, the unofficial patriarch of the family, led to the slightest of gaping rifts forming between the two of them and hence between Will and anyone with a desire for an inheritance.

These things meant nothing to Will as he considered his family’s lifestyle of self indulgence to be devoid of any real worth and so would end up doing all he could to distance himself from them and his upbringing.

Though not particularly fond of the people it currently consisted of Will was still proud of what the Clan Lindsay had once represented. He has tried to live his life by the family motto of Endure Fort (Suffer Bravely) but with little opportunity to suffer in the life he had let alone do it bravely he decided to join Starfleet at soon as he was old enough.

Will seized every opportunity to enjoy himself from the moment he stepped into the Academy but still managed to do well, leading to respect from some higher ups and disdain from others. It was the recommendations of some of the respectful ones that eventually led to Will being recruited by Temporal Investigations.

Through time and tradition Will, as the oldest son, would come to inherit certain family lands and though everyone in his family expected him to simply abandon them he has ensured they’re taken care of to this day.

How High On the Way Up: The O'Sullivan Years

In his capacity as a Jumper for Temporal Investigations Will spent several years partnered to Keiran O’Sullivan as part of the Timeline Control Division. Their working relationship started out rocky with O’Sullivan still brooding over his previous Jump partner Zanh Liis; but over the years the two developed a close friendship and nearly unbreakable trust.

The Golden Boys of Temporal Investigations: Lindsay...and his mentor, Keiran O'Sullivan

This trust would be broken by Will on Halius II. They were scheduled to rendezvous with the USS Aries but Will refused to wait, believing he could fulfil their mission alone. Will enlisted the help of an old friend named Aileene in getting transport on the planet, not realising that Keiran discovered his plans to play hero and was following closely behind. They arrived safely at the planet but they only had minimal intelligence on the terrain and were completely unprepared. Their plans were discovered and the Klingons attacked. Will escaped largely unharmed but Keiran was wounded and tragically Aileene was killed. Though they remained friends this is still a sensitive topic to this day.
Will and Keiran made a gentleman’s agreement during the time they served together; if Keiran were to die first then Will would have to attend his funeral wearing a kilt whereas if Will were to die first then Keiran would have to take at least one full lesson on the bagpipes. True to his word Will would uphold his side of the agreement in an alternate timeline where Keiran died. It was there he first met Zanh Liis from her perspective.

O’Sullivan was never able to completely forget Zanh Liis and came to believe that as long as he had these memories he would be unable to trust himself to function as the job demanded him. In the interests of Will’s safety Keiran had him reassigned without telling and prepared to go in for another round of resequencing procedures. When Will found out he was furious and confronted O’Sullivan. Will struck Keiran just once. He’d always regret that punch which he felt he was only able to land because of the trust Keiran had in him. It especially stung because Keiran’s response was one of sadness, not anger.

Post O’Sullivan

A rift formed between Will and Keiran when Keiran decided (after the latest resequencing failed) to once again tell Zanh Liis how he felt about her. Will did not wish to see O’Sullivan go through having his heart broken again and so refused to support him; cutting off contact. They would not speak for two years until Keiran was scheduled to go in for a dangerous, experimental procedure and Will showed up the day before to speak to him, not wanting to leave things as they had been since he'd been told O'Sullivan may not survive the operation.

Though Keiran gave Will his forgiveness he still went through with the procedure, and forgot completely who Will was.

They did not speak for seven years until Keiran contacted him again. Keiran revealed that he remembered both Will and Liis and was now serving with her on the Serendipity.

When O’Sullivan and Zanh were reunited and decided to marry in the current timeline, Will returned to Earth to serve as officiant for the ceremony. It was there he would first meet Zanh Liis from his perspective.

When Lair Arie was kidnapped from the Serendipity Will was chosen to take Liis back to the ship in an attempt to rescue the child. Will tried to convince Liis not to be involved in the rescue by tampering with both their temporal compasses so she’d have no readings to go by, but Liis saw through this. Arie was successfully rescued and Will’s tampering was discovered. It was then that it was revealed that he was Arie’s temporal Guardian.

On his way back to Earth and before Will could return to his normal duties he was offered a job by Admiral Gemini Lassiter. Officially this job was Interim Director of the Department of Temporal Investigations while Jonas Vox was locked away. Unofficially Will would be searching for corruption within the department. Although reluctant to find himself sitting behind a desk Will did accept the job.

Personality

William Lindsay is an honourable and even responsible man in his way, though perhaps better suited to less ordered times. He lives by his own code, never afraid to break the rules the rest of the galaxy lives by, but there are some things he would never do. He would do anything to look after a friend. He would never break a promise to them nor would he ever intentionally let them down. That said he has been known to do so unintentionally.

Will acts on impulse and does whatever he thinks is right regardless of what may be the consequences. Will is a risk taker who loves to take advantage of every moment of being alive. He’s certainly made mistakes in this life but rarely takes them into consideration. He’s naturally fun loving and therefore a born jokester, but he still finds nothing uncomfortable about silence.

Will has a penchant for beautiful woman but doesn’t believe there’s any such thing as love. He accepts that there is lust and infatuation but doesn’t believe there’s any substance in it. He believes this is just something he’s learnt with experience.

Ambitions: Pretty much whatever appealing thing comes up; if it’s a challenge and it sounds like fun then it’ll be an ambition of his that day.

Likes: A good drink, an evening with a good woman and doing something he’s never done before.

Dislikes: Being restricted, bureaucracy and Jonas Vox.

Strengths: Will is extremely charming, quick thinking and full of enough self confidence that he never second guesses himself when he can’t afford to.

Weaknesses: No one is as charming as Will thinks he is, often won’t take the time to think things through and is so self confident that he never gives his decisions a second thought even when he really should.

Age: 22
Species: Human
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown
Birthworld: Earth
Homeworld: Earth
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 115 lbs.

Personal History: Gira is the child of one of the most powerful- and feared, couples in the history of Starfleet: or more specifically, of Temporal Investigations.

Born to the Jump team gone wrong of Vale and Lassiter, Gira's future with the 'family business' was sealed, long before she was born.

Gira's mother, Gemini Lassiter, never surrendered her maiden name and gave it to her children, since the man she was Jump partners with, married, and later divorced (Captain Joseph Vale)had been through so many memory resequencing procedures that he could not even recall his original, given name after a point. From that time on, he only used his 'assigned' name as dictated by Fleet higher-ups.

The name that Starfleet gave to Joseph Vale was Jonas Vox.

Distinguishing physical characteristics:

Due to a critical combat injury suffered during the Dominion War, several of the vertebrae in her spine have been replaced not once but twice, with tritanium implants. She still suffers chronic pain from the sustained nerve damage.

She also has a small scar on her left chest from a self-inflicted knife wound.

Permanent Starfleet Record:

Zanh Liis' grew up as an orphan of war.

Her parents were killed by the Cardassians shortly after her birth and she was raised by her maternal grandmother until the woman's death when she was four.

She was raised at the children's home at the monastery in the Altaan province and remained there until the age of seventeen, when she left to join Starfleet.

She was accepted into Advanced Tactical Training after graduation and also exhibited above average piloting skills, which were honed with advanced training as well.

She spent her first years out of the Academy flying as a test pilot, then as a fighter pilot during the Dominion War.

Something happened during that time which devastated her so greatly that she was able to be recruited by the shadowy entity within Starfleet known as Temporal Investigations.

She accepted a position in the Timeline Control Division and became a "Jumper"; the term used to describe agents who travel through time to correct fractures in the way that history was supposed to proceed.

After making what she believed to be her final Jump, Liis served side by side with Salvek for a time aboard the USS Independence.

When Salvek was reassigned for the purpose of continuing his parents' work on transwarp technology, it became necessary for Liis to return to TI and resume her role as his Temporal Guardian.
Liis accepted this fate knowing that not only must Salvek and his work survive, but that the fate of the man she had loved since her childhood, Vedek Jariel Camen, was intricately woven through time and history itself with that of Salvek and his family.

After working for several years in obscurity aboard a deep space station (and creating a prototype transwarp engine for Starfleet) Salvek was recalled to service aboard the Flagship. Liis once again followed, serving as Chief of Operations and finally as Acting Captain.

Twists and Turns of Fate

Toward the end of 2387 in the current timeline, Zanh Liis was abducted right before the eyes of her senior staff. Starfleet sent Salvek, (the shoe now on the other foot so to speak) to find and rescue her from her Ferengi captors before they sold her into slavery, or worse.

Back against the wall and believing her chances of rescue were slim to none, Zanh felt she had no choice but to end her own life in order to protect the sensitive information that she carried. She survived- only because the Ferengi intervened out of fear of what the Romulans would do if they were denied their promised prize.

She was rescued shortly after they were forced to put her into stasis, because they knew she would not survive until their Romulan buyers showed up to claim her.

After her rescue, Zanh was taken to Bajor where she underwent reconstructive surgery on her aorta, as well as her spine for the second time to replace her worn vertebral implants.

During her recovery and before leaving the planet, Zanh Liis visited the orphanage at the Altaan Monastery where she'd been raised to try to make peace with her past one last time.

The weary Alchemy crew, meanwhile, was transported back to Earth.

After returning to Earth for debriefing and while still recovering from her injuries, Zanh was informed that her next assignment had already been decided upon by Starfleet- and she would be taking on a new ship with a new, covert assignment: the USS Serendipity.

Alternate Timelines/The Temporal Investigations Years

In an alternate version of the year 2377, Zanh Liis became romantically involved with her Temporal Jump partner, Keiran O'Sullivan, and the resulting disciplinary action and reassignment ended up costing her dearly.

In another alternate version of 2380, after discovering that Vedek Jariel had become Kai and taken another as his wife, Zanh once again acted in defiance of the code of conduct. She retired from Temporal Investigations to marry O'Sullivan.

Again, their romance would only end in tragedy.

O'Sullivan was forced to make another Jump alone to restore Liis to her proper place so that she could accomplish the vital tasks yet to come.

Over the course of the years that she spent working with O'Sullivan, Liis was subjected to many memory resequencing procedures -with varying degrees of success.

She would have no memory of the man- or of their past relationship in alternate times- when he was first assigned to the Sera as Chief of Security.

Liis remained in the dark, even as O'Sullivan's own resequencing broke down and he was tormented by memories of what had once existed between them.
Later in 2388 (current timeline) her own memories were reignited and others were transferred to her directly from O'Sullivan's mind by an interfering race of telepathic beings who meant to 'heal their pain.'

Remembering what had been would nearly cost Liis her life- and in the end cause her to call everything she knew about her life and herself into question; forcing her to redefine both completely in her own eyes.

Liis concealed from TI officials that she retained not only her own memories of their life in past timelines but also the memories from Keiran's perspective that she had been given by the Sylph.

There was, however, one person that she could not keep this truth from.

She confessed to O'Sullivan on Earth, hours after the meeting with TI during which she had led him to believe she had no memory of him.

They knew they must part, but could not say goodbye.

Liis was shaken to her core, left uncertain of her feelings about everything in her life after all she'd seen.

Keiran was certain of his love for her, but just as sure that if he tried to win her in the current time, that again it would cost her everything. Refusing to risk it, he left her side to return to his own command within Temporal Investigations- though it was the hardest thing he had ever done.

Liis quickly began to realize the truth of her own feelings, and grieved for all she had lost.

Later, Fate would intervene; trumping Time and History to reunite Zanh and O'Sullivan and give them one last chance.

Keiran immediately declared that he loved her still, and wanted nothing more than to give her the life that history had denied them.

Liis knew that there was no other life she wanted, and immediately accepted his proposal. Wasting no more time, they were married days later on Earth, surrounded by his family, and their crew.

Liis is still finding her footing in her new reality, but is doing so with deep gratitude and a revitalized sense of purpose. She feels she has truly found her place; serving with this crew, aboard this ship, with Keiran as the steady hand at her side.

She continues on her journey of discovery as she strives to be worthy of the position given her-considering it both a sacred charge and the greatest possible honor to serve as Commanding Officer of Sera's crew; without a doubt the finest in the fleet.

Personal Notes

Though Bajorans are not telepathic or empathic, Liis has an uncanny ability to read people's intentions, for good or ill, before others have any idea that something is going on beneath the surface.

Zanh wears a Bajoran earring as a testament to surviving her childhood; but is not religious in any sense, as most Bajorans are. She keeps the tradition of her husband's homeworld by wearing the wedding rings he gave her: a diamond band and a white gold signet ring bearing the O'Sullivan family crest, a scaled-down version of the ring that he himself wears.

Things she likes: Coffee- She has been practically existing on this beverage alone for the past ten linear years. Hot, strong, double cream.

Liis has a long established love of music- especially late twentieth and twenty-first century music of Earth with compositions by U2, Coldplay, and Keane her all-time favorites.

This, like certain other facets of her personality, made little sense to anyone who met her or to Liis herself for years. After she regained the memories of the years she spent working as Jump partner to O'Sullivan, suddenly the last missing piece of the puzzle fell into place and she found that not only did she make sense, but her life made sense.

He had been not just her partner but her mentor, and during those years had fostered her love of music, taught her how to fence, and in fact, talked her into tasting the very first cup of coffee she ever drank.

Liis loves poetry; The Poetical Works of Tennyson is a favorite, especially Locksley Hall.

In the past, she enjoyed unwinding by rebuilding bi-plane engines and flying such craft on the holodeck. The more responsibility she has taken on over the years, however, the more she has found she prefers quieter pursuits.

She has recently re-discovered the allure of time alone spent driving a vintage "automobile" over winding holographic roads. She much prefers, however, to drive the real thing when visiting the home Keiran built for her in Ireland. Her vehicle of choice, a red covertible which was a belated wedding gift from William Lindsay.

Her very favorite holodeck program continues to be one of the annual, Terran Perseids meteor shower.

Only recently would Liis come to remember, and understand why this specific celestial event evokes such a deep emotional response in her.

Liis has very few 'prized' personal possessions- a side effect of her time working for Temporal during which she had to travel light. Everything she considers truly important to her can fit into one duffel and one small, vintage, brown leather suitcase.

Those items include her wedding rings, a journal and ink pen, her grandmother's earring, several handwritten letters, a wax seal bearing the initial 'Z' and a small sailors spyglass given to her in 2387 by her friend and crewmate, TC Blane. The last item is on display on the desk in her Ready Room and she fidgets with when she's thinking.

Things she hates: Disloyalty, injustice and politics head up the list. Incompetence, or "Just plain stupid" as she puts it, follows closely behind. She was once quoted as having said that "Stupidity should be an offense punishable by death."

Zanh Liis does not drink alcohol- not even a little, not even socially. When asked why, she is known to answer, "There are reasons." She does not object if others around her imbibe, she will simply toast them with her coffee cup instead of champagne.

Official Record of Assignments in the Current, Established Timeline:

2372: Graduated Starfleet Academy. Her grades were decent, but not exceptional. Finished in the middle of her class.

2373:Received certification in Advanced Tactical Training and also special flight certifications.

2373-74: Was assigned as a test pilot to Starfleet Research and Development. Became a fighter pilot during the time leading up to the Dominion War and served several tours of duty during the war.

2375: Was not allowed to return to her squadron after suffering nearly fatal injuries in combat. Was recruited by Temporal Investigations

2376: Was partnered with Commander Keiran O'Sullivan by Temporal Investigations

2376-2379: Classified: Department of Temporal Investigations Timeline Control Division

2379: Liis was sent alone on a Jump back (to 2375) to correct historical events occurring at the end of the Dominion War- and joined the crew of the USS Independence in order to accomplish the task.

2380: Returned to TI to once again serve as Salvek's Guardian, following him across the quadrant as he continued his vital work.

She has spent most of the past decade in one timeline, working to protect Salvek of Vulcan, his brother Sacul, and Vedek Jariel Camen who all had integral parts to play in the recovery of Starfleet after the Dominion War.

These duties once took her to the space station in the heart of the Klingon Outback (Deep Space 23) aboard her small, TI issued ship Stella Polaris.

Notable Quotes: "Go!"
