Starfleet Profile: Keiran O'Sullivan

Name of Officer: Keiran O'Sullivan
Rank: Department Of Temporal Investigations: Captain
Aboard the USS Serendipity: Commander
Current Assignment: Security Liaison for The Alchemy Project
Previous Assignment: Captain of the USS Perseids NX 57871, Temporal Investigations (2388 current timeline)
Species: Human
Age: 42 Standard Years

Physical Description:
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 225 pounds
Hair: Light Brown/Gray
Eyes: Blue

Marital Status: Married:
To Captain Zanh Liis
Stardate 81020

Scars/Tattoos/Distinguishing Physical Characteristics:
Keiran Riley O'Sullivan is broad shouldered and barrel chested man, with a ruggedly handsome appearance. He's been known at times to sport a neatly trimmed beard.

He has broken his nose more than once in physical altercations, the first happening when he was only fourteen, and due to a dislike of doctors that began as a child, he never had it surgically corrected.

He also broke it once in a high school rugby match.

He has a tattoo of his family crest on his right arm.

Personal History:
*1 (see footnote)
Keiran is the middle child of a large family (he has six siblings)born to parents who fought loudly, but at the end of the day, still loved each other. His housewife mother and dock worker father were married for more than forty years until his mother's passing- his father is still alive and still ornery.

The motto for the O'Sullivans is "An Lámh Fhoisteanach Abú" which translates as "The Steady Hand to Victory".

Like many security officers assigned to the brutal front lines during the Dominion War, Keiran found that even though the Federation eventually won the fight, he lost himself along the way, dying a piece at a time along with each of his friends and comrades who perished before the conflict was over.

When Keiran came home in 2374 (To County Cork, Ireland, where he'd been born in 2345) after suffering a critical combat injury, he found that he had been too changed by the war to return to the life of a family man. His wife, Maggie told him that she didn't know the man he'd become. She took their only child, a son, Carrick, and moved away.

The divorce was final a year later and Keiran has not seen his son, who would now be nearly seventeen, since he was a small boy. He writes letters to Carrick frequently, but never receives any reply.

With Keiran's family ties severed and his career stalling due to the baggage he carried back with him from the front, he was deemed a good candidate for recruitment into Special Ops, or Temporal Investigations.

He attended several levels of Advanced Tactical Training in anticipation of a career in either of those fields, but was frustrated that Starfleet Intelligence made him repeat core courses twice. Little did he realize that his temperament was being tested to an even greater degree than his skills as a law enforcement officer.

Eventually he was given the position of senior operative, working as a Jumper with the Timeline Control Division of Temporal Investigations under the direct supervision of a man named Jonas Vox.

In 2376 Keiran was assigned to mentor a headstrong new recruit named Zanh Liis. He had no idea that this meeting would end up changing the course of the rest of his life.

Due to repeated attempts at memory resequencing procedures (with varying degrees of success) Keiran would remember, and then lose memory of having worked with Zanh as his career progressed.

His relationship with Liis was complicated from the start, but became even more difficult as his feelings towards her changed and he wanted to pursue a relationship with her that nothing to do with their work. He knew that this was strictly against the code of conduct for Temporal Operatives, and did everything he could to keep their relationship professional- and Zanh Liis at a safe emotional distance.

In an alternate timeline version of the year 2377, Keiran O'Sullivan found that Zanh reciprocated his feelings. Acting on those emotions, however, would have catastrophic consequences for them both and require Keiran to make a jump into the past to correct the timeline, even though doing so meant that they could not be together again.

Despite this, he would repeat the same mistake again of going against the rules and in another variant of the year 2380, he and Zanh retired from Temporal Investigations and actually married.

They lived a year as man and wife before disaster struck and, as Keiran put it to Jariel Camen when he tried to explain, "Time took its penance."

After it became clear that their relationship was simply not meant to be, he would once again have to make the lonely journey of jumping back, to correct history and restore Zanh to her proper place.
Devastated by the loss of his wife and former TI partner- and what he considered to be all hopes of happiness along with her- Keiran submitted to a very dangerous procedure; one that he was promised would rid him of the memories of Zanh Liis once and for all. *2 (see footnote)
By the time Keiran was assigned to the Serendipity in early 2388, he had been free of the memories of his past for a long enough time that Admiral Vox felt it necessary to test whether or not that final, drastic resequencing procedure had worked, and would hold. He assigned Keiran as Zanh's Chief of Security on the brand new ship- knowing that she did not remember O'Sullivan, but worrying that O'Sullivan's memories and emotions were too strong to be suppressed forever.

The Admiral was right.

Within months of arriving on the ship and interacting with the Captain, the barriers in Keiran's brain began to break down, reactivating the memory engrams and once again plunging him into despair. Remembering her, their work together and their relationship as it had been in alternate branches of space time- he was secretly tormented by the fact that she did not remember him.

Fearing that discovery of their history could do irreparable damage to Zanh and the timeline, Keiran struggled to maintain control, and asked himself every morning if this day would be the last he was able to spend on her ship without risking another disaster.

All of his struggles appeared to be in vain when Zanh Liis suddenly began remembering things about their past relationship, even as Keiran's memories continued to intensify. They did not know this was due to the fact that a species of alien 'healers' was trying to intervene and 'help' free them of their painful pasts- doing more harm then good in the process.

It turned out in the end that his time on the Sera was simply part of another planned Jump for TI. Upon remembering, and the resolution of the Sylph first contact situation, Keiran was pulled from the Sera's roster and returned to his command within Temporal Investigations.

He continued to hold out hope that the next jump would be the one in which he finally bested both the Fates and Time itself- and found his way back to Zanh Liis for good.

In late 2388, Keiran would get his dearest wish.

After taking a Jump that he was certain would be his last, destiny stepped in and brought him back to his correct place in time, and to Zanh Liis' arms.

Due to the effects of living non-linear time he felt as though they'd been separated for two years; for Liis it was only a matter of weeks. Still he proposed to her as soon as he was told that his days with Temporal Investigations were over; and was amazed when Zanh actually said yes.

Wasting no more time after all they had been through, they married days later, surrounded by family and friends in Ireland on Stardate 81020.18

Work Ethic

Keiran very much considers himself an old fashioned detective; a "cop on the beat" and likes to get to know the faces, if not the personalities of all the people he serves with.

Social Interaction

Keiran is naturally gregarious- especially after several pints of Guinness. When drinking stronger spirits with a mind to escaping dark memories of the past, however, Keiran withdraws from all around him, drinks alone, and is a very sullen drunk.

(NOTE: Keiran swore off alcohol after the conclusion of his time on the Serendipity, toward the end of which he ended up starting a drunken brawl in Illusions Lounge and had to be subdued by TC Blane.)

Keiran was raised strictly Roman Catholic and was a choir boy at the Church of Christ the King at Turner's Cross. He still possesses a fine singing voice that is broad in range and easily covers the octaves between baritone and tenor without missing a note.

Eccentricities: Keiran wears an O'Sullivan family crest signet ring on his left hand where one would normally expect a wedding ring to be. Eventually, Zanh Liis discovered this was because it was the wedding ring she had given him when they had married in the variant version of 2380.
Special Skills

In addition to his advanced tactical training, Keiran is skilled in martial arts, hand to hand combat, use and handling of explosives and firearms. He knows his way around not only the modern weapons of the day, but the historical weapons of his homeland as well, which he considers to be a matter of pride.

For some, like me, that ultimate sacrifice is not the giving of the lives that we have. It's the giving up on the lives that we know we might have, if we could but stretch our arms wide enough to outreach the grasp of the Fates, just once

Starfleet Profile: Communications Officer

Name: Dane Marion Cristiane
Rank: Ensign
Age: 24
Species: Human
Birthplace: Effingham Illinois; Earth
Homeworld: Unknown
Position: Communications Officer, USS Serendipity

Physical Description:
Height: 6'1
Weight: 185 lbs.
Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown

Scars/tattoos/distinguishing marks: Dane has an elaborate cross tattooed onto his right arm. On his left arm, he has a scull and crossbones within a compass rose made of thorns.

Both of his ears have been pierced over the years and he wears one small gold hoop in his right ear when off duty (and is bent on having it accepted into Uniform Code- he says if the Bajorans can wear an earring why can't he? Zanh is still debating the issue with him.)

He also has a very fine scar (a line) that runs along his jawline on the left side but is barely distinguishable (you really have to look for it)

Things he likes: Very little.

Things he hates: At the beginning of his career aboard the Sera? Almost everything.

-=/\=-

Dane was a 'throw-away' child. He was born to a very young mother and never knew who his father was. When she could not properly care for him, he was put into the child welfare system. He never felt he really had a home or anyone who cared about him growing up, and when he was twelve he ran away from his last foster home and did not plan on ever returning to Earth again.

He made his way doing anything he could to survive, selling banned substances, selling himself.

Eventually , by the age of 19 he ended up working at the "Spa"- read- house of prostitution- on Deep Space 23. His official job title was 'massage therapist." He made extra money selling information in addition to the usual services.

That was where he met Zanh Liis, while she was working undercover.

She employed him to obtain information for her- and when the situation on the station destabilized and most of the civilians were leaving, Zanh made Dane an offer that intrigued him.

She thought that he would be a perfect candidate for Special Operations, or Temporal Investigations.

Figuring it may be his only way out of the life he had long since resigned himself to, he took her up on that offer and returned to Earth. Bypassing the Academy in favor of an intensive, covert Starfleet training program that would bring him into the fold at TI without ever registering him on the radar as a recruit.

Years of being on his own and answering to no one, however, have left Dane with the distinct impression that he knows best in almost every situation. Anyone who disagrees with him either doesn't see the bigger picture, have all the facts, or is just a total moron.

This did not win him any points with his trainers and handlers in TI training- and Admiral Vox has reached the end of his limited patience with the young man- offering one last chance for him to get his attitude right, or go back to the streets and the dead end life he wanted to escape.

Vox contacted Zanh and told her that she could either try to reign in Cristiane herself, or he was through with the program. So, Zanh figured that making him take on the task of basically "being a glorified receptionist" was the best way to get him in hand.

The first thing she did when he arrived aboard ship? Make him cut his long, shaggy hair.

It remains to be seen if Dane will make it through the rest of his training and go on to his intended career in Temporal Investigations. Admiral Vox has turned him over to Zanh Liis at the beginning of 2388 with this order: "Break his rebellious streak, or break his neck trying."

Dane was taken on as a personal project by Lt. Commander Keiran O'Sullivan when the towering Irishman began serving aboard the Sera as Chief of Security.

He began to show that he did have the ability to take orders and accept authority, even if only grudgingly, respecting O'Sullivan as no one he had ever met.

All of that would begin to quickly unravel after O'Sullivan was reassigned, quickly and quietly following first contact with the mysterious Sylph.

TC Blane stepped up immediately. Not wanting to see Dane regress, Blane informed him that he planned to continue the training that O'Sullivan had started, but Cristiane resisted at every turn.

Angry and bitter, Dane blamed Zanh Liis entirely for O'Sullivan's departure, certain that somehow she must have made the decision, or been the reason that someone else had been forced to make it.

Knowing how resentful Dane was, Admiral Vox took advantage of his vulnerability and feelings that the one person he thought he could trust had abandoned him.

To serve his own agenda, Vox ensnared Dane into a plot to bring him proof that Zanh Liis had withheld pertinent information after her Sylph encounter; information vital to Temporal Investigations and the Federation...and vital to the future of Keiran O'Sullivan.

He promised Dane that if he succeeded in his assignment to prove Zanh a liar that he would be reassigned to O'Sullivan's TI command, the USS Perseids.

Dane took the bait, and he ended up getting caught in the act of going through Zanh's personal effects.

She intervened before he could do any real damage, but the fragile trust forged between them was shattered by his betrayal.

Realizing how huge a mistake he'd made and how badly his course of action had wounded Zanh personally, Dane was devastated. He was tormented by guilt, thinking how disappointed Keiran would be in him if he knew what he'd done.

Anxious for any and all chances to redeem himself, Dane jumped at the opportunity to join the Away Team assigned to attempt a rescue of O'Sullivan's son, who had run away and gotten himself into a situation he couldn't get out of.

At the end of the rescue mission, the crew once again encountered the Sylph and Dane was caught up in a "Alternate Continuity Paradox," within which he experienced a very different 'reality' than the one he was accustomed to.

A frightening, dark series of events in that time line left him standing in a field in Ireland, next to Keiran O'Sullivan's grave.

After the crew was returned to their proper place in time and space, Dane was overwhelmed by the magnitude of the things he'd seen and experienced in that 'other time' - and at last truly understood what it meant to work for Temporal Investigations.

All that they had tried to teach him previously and failed clicked instantly in his mind.

He was changed to the core by his new found understanding of the things Zanh and O'Sullivan had been through and accomplished in their careers for the sake of the Federation.

He wanted, for the first time in his life, to not only live up to their expectations of him but to exceed them.

Determined to work harder than ever to make a career with TI a reality, Dane has decided that a future Jumping timelines to keep History in check is exactly what he was born to do.

Physical Characteristics

Born on the mean streets of Maidenhead, to lowly parents only considered to be middle upper class in British society, Ashton’s life was a struggle from the very beginning. At the age of two, he forced his parents to fire their maid of seven years for her inability to furnish him with oatmeal at the proper temperature. Finding “competent help,” was an ongoing travail for Ashton throughout his adolescent years.

As if the lack of qualified servants in Maidenhead were not enough, Ashton was forced to deal with unrelenting teasing from his peers due to the poor conditions in which he lived. His dearest companion Garrison was fond of reminding Ashton at least once a day that the Westerly Estate was located upon no less then seven acres more than the Ledbetter estate. Nine, if one were to count the servant’s quarters and polo grounds, which of course, one should. To make matters worse, Ashton’s father was the senior partner at the law firm where Garrison’s father was principal and owner.

Despite Ashton’s failings, Garrison saw fit to allow young Ledbetter to furnish gifts for his birthday parties, and the two shared a friendship that endured throughout their childhoods. The two would part ways however during their college years.

During a friendly between Oxford and Farnham Royal, Garrison and Ashton were fielding at Mid-on and Mid-wicket, respectfully. The batsman delivered an aerial on-drive, which Ashton and Garrison converged upon quickly. They collided and fell to the ground, Ashton’s nose bloodied and Garrison’s shoulder irreparably bruised. The ball fell to the ground as well, allowing Farnham Royal to break a late stalemate and emerge victorious over Oxford for the first time in twenty-seven years.

Each man blamed the other for not conceding the catch. Ashton, in a fit of unbridled fury, called his friend an incompetent featherbrain and Garrison retorted by questioning the sanctity of the marriage of Ashton’s parents. The two decided there was no point in continuing to associate with each other, and went their separate ways.

Perfect grades and dates with a different member of the female Crew team each night, soon were not enough to satisfy Ashton, as he blossomed into manhood. Oxford, he suddenly realized, was beneath him as long as Garrison Westerly was on the roll with him.

Growing tired of limiting his conquests to human females, he decided it best to give Starfleet, and its cadets, a chance. He left Maidenhead and Oxford behind and enrolled at the age of nineteen.

The Academy proved fruitful in satisfying his ambitions. Like Oxford, he found the coursework unchallenging, but the Vulcan cadets proved to be a test worthy of his abilities.

At twenty-two, with credits transferred from Oxford, he graduated the Academy and received his first posting on the patrol vessel Citadel. Apparently the staff at the Academy had taken notice of his propensity for wooing the opposite sex however. The Citadel, he discovered with unabashed horror, had an all male crew. The ship was apparently where Starfleet sent chauvinism to die, or at least, in Ashton’s case, be repressed. And no, there were no holodecks either, not that Ledbetter would be caught dead wasting his significant charms on a hologram.

Advised that promotion was the only way off the vessel, Ledbetter was suddenly inspired to become the very model of Starfleet efficiency and duty. He spent his days serving the Chief of Operations and his nights tinkering with temporal anomalies and theory, just for extra credit.

His first paper, A Study in High Energy Plasma Discharges and Their Effects on the Temporal Barrier filtered through Starfleet, from the Citadel, to Starfleet Science, to Starfleet Security, and finally to the desk of Gemini Lassiter.

It taught her nothing new, but it was certainly something new to those in this time. Working behind the scenes, she engineered his transfer from the Citadel to a research vessel and then to a capital starship. She watched his career with great fascination, and at age thirty-one she called him in to Temporal Investigations for his first interview.

Lassiter was somewhat taken aback by the man behind the personnel file, specifically by his immediate attempt to flirt with her. There was no doubt in her mind that he had the technical and theoretical knowledge one would need to serve as support staff on a Jump ship. The problem was placing him.

She decided Ledbetter would only work with two other members of TI effectively. Keiran O’Sullivan, because he was the only male with the restraint not to hurt Ledbetter, and Zanh Liis, because she was the only female with the restraint to not sleep with him.

Ledbetter would serve each Captain for countless years of non-linear time; as a competent officer, trustworthy associate, and voice of reason during times of chaos, especially where it came to Zanh Liis. The woman, however, nearly drove him to madness. In his own words:

Zanh Liis is an impetuous, irrational and unscholarly whirling dervish of a woman whose imprudent nature is surpassed only by her zeal for her work. Despite it all, she somehow manages to ‘get the job done,’ as she is fond of pointing out to me. I fear however that someday her tactics will lead to my untimely demise, depriving Starfleet of my wealth of knowledge and indisputable charisma.

Recently, with the retirement of Keiran O’Sullvan and Zanh Liis from TI, Admiral Lassiter concluded it was time for Ashton Ledbetter to be given a command of his own.

He was assigned the TI Jump ship USS Consequence, which met its untimely demise in the late 2388 battle to save Lair Arie from the Romulans, before Ledbetter could even depart in the newly christened ship for its first jump.

USS Consequence, Circa 2388

In the wake of the loss of the Consequence, and with no other ships to assign Ledbetter to as Captain, Admiral Lassiter decided to place Ashton as an observer on the USS Serendipity. His stated assignment is to look in on the daily operations of the ship and her crew to ensure Zanh Liis is running a 'ship-shape ship'. Off the record, Admiral Lassiter is secretly concerned her recent marriage to Keiran O’Sullivan may affect the judgment of Zanh Liis, and vice versa. She is hoping Ledbetter can help her root out any issues before they can put The Alchemy Project in danger.

Quotes from Former/Current CO's and colleagues:

"I’m happy Ashton is moving on to bigger and better things. He has served this ship well. When properly motivated, his skills are significantly above average. Can I come with him?" ~Captain Anderson, USS Citadel

"He exhibits remarkable efficiency and knowledge for a member of his species. I find his fascination with the female Vulcans to be beyond the boundaries of acceptable behavior, however." ~Captain T’Mara, USS Memphis

Vulcan Soprano T'Lara starred as Japanese Empress Go-Sakuramachi in the critically acclaimed Chrysanthemum at the Grand Opera House of Vulcan Circa 2388

Ashton was the first Terran male ever to earn a court-mandated restraining order on the planet Vulcan. He is required to remain at least one kilometer away from reknown Vulcan Lyric Soprano T'Lara and was forced to relinquish his season tickets to the Opera house, after proof was given that he'd sent no less than 342 fan mail letters to her in which he referred to her as "The Future Mrs. Ashton Ledbetter".

"What can I say; the man is a lifesaver. Which is fortunate for him, because I’m going to kill him." ~Captain Zanh Liis, Temporal Investigations: CO USS Polaris

Age: 22

Hair Color: Brown

Personal History: Gira is the child of one of the most powerful- and feared, couples in the history of Starfleet: or more specifically, of Temporal Investigations.

Born to the Jump team gone wrong of Vale and Lassiter, Gira's future with the 'family business' was sealed, long before she was born.

Gira's mother, Gemini Lassiter, never surrendered her maiden name and gave it to her children, since the man she was Jump partners with, married, and later divorced (Captain Joseph Vale)had been through so many memory resequencing procedures that he could not even recall his original, given name after a point. From that time on, he only used his 'assigned' name as dictated by Fleet higher-ups.

The name that Starfleet gave to Joseph Vale was Jonas Vox.
